For two years now, The Association for the Study of Dreams (ASD) has hosted a Psiber Dreaming Online Conference where dreamers participated in Mutual Dreaming, precognitive dreaming and telepathy in dreams. Each year, there was a Mutual Dreaming contest as well as other dreaming contests. This year, a number of participants were curious about how many similar elements they saw cropping up in the dreams of that night. Two questions arose.
I then decided to explore those questions to see what I could find. Here is a copy of the proposal I put to the dreamers at last years (2003) Psiber Dreaming Online Conference.
"The purpose of this research project (Intentionally As An Important Factor In Mutual Dreaming Similarities) is to attempt to show that having the intention of dreaming mutually will cause more frequent similarities in dream elements among the mutual dreamers.
The process will be as follows:
A computer program called DreamSpinner will be used to input all the dreams submitted to this project. This program uses the words in the narrative (dream report) to create frequency lists of all elements in the dream report. One data processor, Bjo Ashwill, will maintain reliable consistency in her method of linking each word in the narrative to the appropriate categories in the program. (An expanded version of the Hall/van de Castle content analysis categories.)
Three different groupings of dreams will be kept in separate databases in DreamSpinner to be able to compare these different groupings with each other.
First grouping will be dreams that occurred during a mutual dream contest with full intentionally in place (Dreams from 2 different contests 2002 and 2003 will be used, each in a separate database)
Second grouping will be dreams from those same mutual dreamers but from dates chosen randomly in the past so no mutuality intention was present. (Assuming no precog time warp!)
Third is a control group of dreamers who do not necessarily consider themselves Psi dreamers who will present dreams from a randomly chosen night or nights.
I would like three things from each of you willing to participate.
1. The Dreams:
The mutual dreams for 2003 you entered into the contest.
The mutual dreams you entered into last years contest (for those of you who did last years Mutual Dreaming contest.)
Your dreams for the night of July 15, 2003 and/or the night of April 4, 2003.
(Although I am not requesting you fill out Ed’s questionnaire, I am asking you to reexamine your dream report with his questionnaire in mind. Fill in all those missing details we take for granted. The fact that I don’t know you personally and I will be inputting the information into a computer program means that only the details you write in the report will be examined. Do not assume I will know the shape of your table (square, round, oval etc.) Label the characters with age (adult, child, baby or teen), sex (male or female or blended), numbers of them (group or individual), and identity (relation? Friend? Husband or wife or child? Occupational, Famous or prominent?) Colors, shapes, sounds, feelings need to have descriptive words in the dream report for it to be counted in the DreamSpinner software. More is better."
168 dreams total.
83 dreams were from the participants of the Mutual Dreaming Contest night 9/25/03.
85 dreams were from the two control groups. (53 from non Psiber dreamers) and (32 from Psiber dreamers on nights other than 9/25/03.
ZIGGLE is code for a female participant of the Psiber Dreaming Conference.
ZIGGLEM male Psiber dreaming conference participants.
ZAGGLE is the code word for female control group participants.
ZAGGLEM for male control group dreamers.
Unless otherwise noted, Ziggle stands for all Psi dreamers and Zaggle for all non Psi dreamers. When the groups are separated out according to male and female, it is specified.
These dreams were entered into DreamSpinner, a content analysis computer program. Each dream then was subjected to a similar linking process.
1. Words that were automatically NOT counted were: a, an, and, the, to, who’ve. These are the most frequently used words in narratives and do not add significant content. This first step chopped the length of the dream narratives. For example: one dreamer had 1808 words in 5 dreams. This was chopped down to 1072 Hits or 59.20% of the narrative was linked. Another dreamer had 1158 words in 5 dreams which was chopped down to 813 Hits. This is 70% of the narrative that was linked. This simply indicates different writing styles.
2. Pronouns, prepositions, helping verbs, negation words (no, not) were not counted. (The intent of the negations words were carried in the word it negated. "I was not happy" was linked to the category "Unhappy".
3. Some words had multiple category links. All character names were linked four times. One in the Character’s Age Category, one in the Character’s Numbers category, One in the Character’s Sex category and one in the Character’s Identity category. Other examples of multiple category linking are words like "box". It is linked to the Object category, and to the Object Relationship category as a Container.
4. Root words are recognized in their different forms. For example, the root word "slow" has the following ending possibilities: slows, slowed, slowing, slower, slowest, slowly, slowness. Any word with these different endings are linked to the root word "slow". In addition, there are different definitions:
Slow1=A motion that is not fast. It takes more time to do.
Slow2=Not slowing down. The velocity continues.
Slow3=Mentally slow, not catching on quickly.
Slow4=Slow down, reduce velocity in a vehicle.
Slow5=To walk less quickly. To slow down.
The person inputting the dream into DreamSpinner chooses which definition is correct within the context of the dream being linked.
5. DreamSpinner only reports one incident of a word per dream. So if a dreamer repeats a word, it will not effect the total count. For example: A dream report might say "I saw the box. The box was square and solid. The man picked up the box. Another man took that box from the first man." Several situations arise from this way of counting. It is necessary to use different definitions of root words to denote more than one when it is important. For example it is important to have an accurate count of characters. So the first mentioned man would be linked under man1 and the second man would be linked under man2. It is not important to note how many times the word is mentioned when it has the same definition. So the word box1 would be linked just once per dream. Now some dreamers had 5 or more dreams counted in the samples. If a character name was used in more than one dream, it would show up. For example someone might dream of a family member in 5 different dreams. So that family member count would be 5. We have no way of knowing (except of course to manually find those dreams and see whether one or more dreamers drempt about that character.) So some frequency counts can be influenced by one dreamer.
6. A word about dream narrative length. The more words in a dream, the more possible similarities will be found. This research project chose to use all the dreams regardless of length. A more rigorous protocol would be necessary to completely compensate for the dream narrative lengths. (Such as only examining dreams between 50 and 300 words in length. This unfortunately would remove the Designated Dreamer as well as some other meticulous and detailed reporters of their dreams. Keeping this in mind, I have made some attempts to equalize the dream length problem.
a. Stripping out the many extra words as described above left only meaningful words to be linked.
b. Words that were repeated were only counted once.
c. The HP method of comparing different dream sets helped equalize the size issue. The HP factor is found by comparing the number of hits for a word or sub category in one dream set with the number of total hits in a category. Then the percentages that created are compared with the same ratio of hits to total hits in a category in the second dream set. For example:

Color is the name of a category. Under that category are sub categories like Black, Red, Green, White and so on. So in the dream set of all the dreams (168 total) (Base Dream Set) together, there are 342 links to the category color and 29 of those links are to the sub category Green. So Green is 8.47% of all Colors in the base dream set. Green is 8.9% of all colors in the Mutual Dreaming ’03 night dream set. When those two percentages are compared, The Mutual Dreaming ’03 night dreams are only slightly raised in frequency than the Base Dream Set of all dreams. Hence the HP Factor number is .035 which is under the .1 HP it takes to be considered a significant increase. Now, the Zaggle control group dream set shows a percentage of 6.6% which is compared to the Base dream set of 8.47%. It is less than the usual number so the HP Factor shows a -.038. The Psi dreamers who had dreams on a non mutual dreaming night showed a percentage of 8.21% which is close to the same frequency level as the Base Dream Set.
Hence, what appears to be a high incident of "Green" in the Mutual Dreaming ’03 night (MD03) Dream Set ends up being close to the norm when compared to the control groups. When you look at the number of "Hits", in this case 20 hits in the MD03 Dream Set, it appears to be a far greater number than the other two groups. However, the entire size of the dream set is much larger and the HP Factor number works that out for us.
7. A word about differences in details in the dream narratives. Some dreamers wrote their Dream Narrative with the intention of giving as much structural detail as possible. They described the color of hair, the shapes of objects, the sizes of areas and so on in much greater depth than a person would ordinarily do when writing their dream report for themselves. All dreamers had the written instructions of how to write in greater detail for this project, and it appears some did so, and others didn’t. Nonetheless, in the example above with the color green, I did not see any elevating figures that could show this made a statistical difference. In addition, the category "Characteristics", which has most descriptive words like Colors, Size, Intensity, Appearance, and so on shows a very small increase in these types of words in the MD03 night dream set. 0.051 to be precise, when compared to the Base Norm Set. This is not a significant number. Perhaps in a larger sampling, it would increase. It would be prudent for further researchers to work out better protocol on having a similar level of detail in dream narratives.
8. In addition to all of the above, when the finished report in table form was generated, it was over 7700 records long. I saw that it would be useful to cut out the lesser frequency counts to make the material more manageable. I removed any word or sub category that only had a single "hit" in the Base Dream Set. I also removed many of the words or sub categories that only had 2 hits in the Base Dream Set and those 2 hits were evenly distributed between the three sub sets of dreams. This still left over 3000 records. The full Mutual Dreaming Comparison Table is found here.
9. After comparing the three dream sets with the Base Dream Set, I then turned my attention to the individual dreamers and how similar their dream material came to the Designated Dreamers (DD) dream material. I gave each dreamer a code name such as N1, N26 ,NFN1, N1Non, etc) The purpose is of course to protect the anonymity of the dreamers. I then counted how many hits each dreamer had in their dream set, how many dreams were in their dream set, and how many of their hits were also found in the Designated Dreamer (DD)’s dreams. Then I created an Excel spread sheet showing exactly what words, subcategories and categories were matched by the dreamers to the DD dreams.
10. One can also look at how many of the dreamers matched the DD’s dream material and hence how many were matching each other as well.. Here is the Individual Dreamers Match With DD table.
11. A word about different levels as defined by Ed Kellogg III. The Labeling level (exact word matches), The Structural Level and the Thematic or Emotional Levels. Although DreamSpinner works by matching labeling words, which gives an accurate count of matches of vocabulary, it also groups words together in Categories and sub-categories which can be used, I believe, to get at the Structural level. Certainly not all that the mind of a person can determine to be a match will be evident. But I think this is a good start toward looking more deeply into the dreams to determine if the dreams are matching in any statistically significant way.
So, what is the definition of Mutual Dreaming. Here are two.
"In a minimal sense, a "mutual dreaming" describes a situation where two or more people have similar dreams on the same night. In 'full-fledged' mutual dreams two or more people dream of meeting one another in virtually identical dream environments ("dreamscapes'), having many unusual details in common."
Ed Kellogg, Ph.D.
Mutual Dreaming FAQ
(Compiled by Linda Lane Magall¢n. Version 2/98)
1. What is a mutual dream?
The most generic definition is, "Something in my dream corresponds to
something in your dream." The two classic mutual dreams are meeting and meshing. In a meeting
dream event, I see you and you see me. For meshing dreams, we share themes,
emotions or symbols; or the wording of our dream reports is quite similar.
1. When the three Dream sets were measured against the Base Dream Set,
I measured each dream set to determine what categories, sub categories and individual words had a positive HP number where the other two Dream Sets did not. I further shortened the list by removing any categories or words that only had 0,1 or 2 hits. The MD03 Dream Set had 305 records where they alone had a positive HP number (of .1 or higher) with more than 2 hits per record. The Zaggle Dream Set had 249 records. The NonMD03 Ziggles Dream Set had 292 records. Out of a total of 3084 records, the MD03 Dream Set had 9.88% (13880 Hits) of the records were elevated significantly more than the other two Dream Sets. The Non MD03Ziggles Dream Set was at 9.46% (6424 Hits)and the Zaggles Dream Set was at 8.07% (5583 Hits). These numbers do not take into consideration the differing sizes of the Dream Sets and we are now measuring two different kinds of data. The number of Hits and the number of Records.)
2. Individual Dreamers were measured against the DD. All Dreamers Comparison Table
The Known Dreamers category is one of those categories where all the hits were from MD03 Dreams. The DD was mentioned in 10 dreams, by 6 dreamers. This of course makes sense, since the intention of these dreamers was to have a mutual dream with the DD.
Dreamer N4 drempt of 6 Known Dreamers. None of the dreamers mentioned N4 in their dreams.
Dreamer N15 drempt of 6 Known Dreamers, only one dreamer, N3 drempt of N15. A direct mutual hit, if the labeling words can be taken as evidence.
N3 drempt of 3 dreamers, only the before mentioned Dreamer N15 drempt of N3.
Colors and locations were noticed as common reoccurring events in the dreams.

The color words Yellow and Brown were the two colors that were slightly elevated for the Mutual Dreamer Night. Red, White, Black and Blue were elevated in the control group and White, Red, Blue and Black were elevated in the NonMD03 Ziggle Dreamers. So commonalties occur regardless of Intentionality, in these three samples.

Unfamiliar dream scenes were barely above the norm for the MD03 Dreamers. It was significantly elevated for the NonMD03 Dreamers. Familiar dream scenes will significantly elevated in the Zaggle or control group dreams. The DD had all five dreams in unfamiliar settings.
Outdoors locations were only marginally above the norm for the MD03 Dreamers, as it was for the Zaggle dreams. Indoor scenes were significantly elevated in the Zaggle dreams, and Ambiguous Indoor/Outdoor scenes were significantly high for the Non MD03 Ziggle group. The DD had 4 Indoor locations and 1 outdoor location.

In this sub category of Location, the DD had two dreams with the word "end", meaning at the extreme edges of something or place. 11 other dreams, (10 other dreamers) in the MD03 night dream set had this same concept. Neither other control groups had a significant incidence of this word. This is a tiny example of a labeling word that shows a strong cluster in the Mutual Dreaming '03 night dreams which doesn't happen in the control groups. However, if we call this a "hit", then we also have to call it a hit when it occurs in control groups and not in the Mutual Dreaming group. For example:

The general region term "place" is significantly high for the Zaggle control group, and not so in either Ziggle groups.
The Bridges category was interesting. Two hits for tunnel and one for bridge in the MD03 Dreamers Set and 2 hits for bridges and one for tunnel in the Zaggle control group set. The tunnel similarity is seen as a "hit" between the DD(Designated Dreamer) and the 4th prize winner. Yet, the same type of scene happened in the control group with bridges. They did not have any intentions of dreaming together.

The subcategory Not Capable (under Failure) refers to not being able to hear or to move. The DD did not have a hit in this category, but 8 hits were found in the other MD03 Ziggle dreamers.
The term "well" means doing well, or being successful. It is nicely elevated. 3 of the 7 hits on this labeling word were the DD.
The sub category Potential Success is also elevated. (4 of the 38 hits were the DD.)
This is a more complete list also showing the sub categories where clusters occurred in the three different dream groups (MD03), (Zag), and (N03Zig)

The "shoulder" reference did not show up in the DD's dreams. If this is a mutual dream event, then the Mutual dreamers had it with each other, but not with the DD.
The "hair" reference could be a result of Mutual dreamers making a stronger effort to use descriptive words and named the color of hair on characters more frequently.
Skin and Belly Area are mentioned in the DD narratives. Potential Death is not. Disabled is. Several hearing and a number of Taste words were used in the DD narrative.
Please click on Full Table to see the complete information. This is very large, so expect to wait for at least 40 seconds.
